25 Best Things to Do in McKinney, TX

When clients ask me what there is to do in McKinney, they usually expect me to say "the square" and stop there. The downtown square is a big part of it, but McKinney also has a 289 acre nature sanctuary, about 80 miles of trails, a PGA TOUR stop, an NCAA championship game every December, and a long list of festivals that fill the calendar from April through Thanksgiving.

This list is what I'd tell a friend who just moved here or is thinking about it. I checked hours, dates, and closures in October 2026, and a couple of big ones are worth knowing about: the McKinney Performing Arts Center has been closed for renovation since February 2026, and Erwin Park closed in August 2026 for a renovation the city expects to finish in fall 2027. I've noted both below so you don't drive out to a locked gate.

If you're weighing a move, pair this with my guide to moving to McKinney. For deeper dives, I also have a full Historic Downtown McKinney guide and a list of the best parks and trails in McKinney.

Downtown and History

1. Walk the Historic Downtown Square

The city counts more than 120 shops and over two dozen restaurants in the downtown commercial district, and many of them are independently owned. You'll find antiques, home decor, apparel boutiques, galleries, and gift shops on the streets around the old courthouse, mainly Virginia, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The McKinney Commercial Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Go on a weekday morning if you want parking and quiet, or a Saturday night if you want the crowd.

2. Shop the Saturday Farmers Market at Chestnut Square

The McKinney Farmers Market runs Saturdays at Chestnut Square, 315 S. Chestnut St. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon from April through December and 9 a.m. to noon from January through March. Select Saturdays add live music, face painting, and pony rides. It's a short walk south of the square, so park once and do both.

3. Tour Chestnut Square Heritage Village

Chestnut Square preserves historic McKinney homes and buildings, including a chapel and an 1870s house now used as a bridal suite. Its listed hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Watch for Living History Day, which is scheduled for Nov. 7, 2026.

4. Visit the Collin County History Museum

The museum sits in a historic post office building at 300 E. Virginia St., one block east of the square. It's open Fridays and Saturdays, but Visit McKinney lists two different sets of hours, so check the museum's site before you go. It's a good rainy day stop and gives you context for everything else downtown.

5. Catch a Show at the Restored Courthouse

The McKinney Performing Arts Center is inside the old Collin County Courthouse, completed in 1875 and reopened as a performing arts venue after a 2000 to 2006 renovation. It closed Feb. 1, 2026 for a $10 million renovation with new seating, acoustic upgrades, a permanent stage, and a restored 1930s paint color. The city estimated completion in fall 2026. Check the schedule before planning around it.

6. Hunt for the Tiny Doors and Monarchs

McKinney Tiny Doors is a series of small art installations hidden around downtown, and kids love turning it into a scavenger hunt. There are also eight Monarchs of McKinney butterfly sculptures in the cultural district, including one at Chestnut Square. It's free and fills an hour between lunch and shopping.

Food and Drink

7. Have Dinner at Harvest at The Masonic

Harvest, at 215 N. Kentucky St., was recommended in the Michelin Guide's first Texas edition in November 2024. It's the place I send people for an anniversary or a client dinner. Book ahead on weekends.

8. Spend an Afternoon at TUPPS Brewery

TUPPS moved into a new campus at 402 E. Louisiana St. in 2024, built around the old grain silos east of downtown. It has a bigger taproom, an outdoor bar and stage, a kitchen with burgers and wings, and small businesses in the repurposed silos. It's also a good look at how east McKinney is changing. Brewery tours are on its event calendar.

9. Eat Barbecue and Pie

Hutchins BBQ is a Texas barbecue staple with a McKinney location, and Emporium Pies has a McKinney shop that reviewers rave about. Spoons Cafe is a locally owned restaurant with strong reviews. Expect a wait at peak times.

10. Walk to Coffee and Dessert Downtown

Downtown has enough coffee shops and dessert spots that you can easily fill an afternoon walking between them. Pair a coffee with a lap around the square and the side streets off Louisiana and Virginia. My downtown guide lists more names.

Outdoors

11. Explore the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary

The Heard opened in 1967 thanks to Bessie Heard, a McKinney native, and now covers 289 acres of wetlands, prairie, and bottomland forest with more than 5 miles of trails. There are bird blinds, butterfly gardens, a pioneer village, an Animals of the World exhibit, and indoor exhibits. It's at 1 Nature Place and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., closed Mondays. Check its site for admission and seasonal exhibits.

12. Rent a Kayak at Towne Lake Park

Towne Lake Park, at 1405 Wilson Creek Parkway, covers about 230 acres. Kayak rentals run through the Rent.Fun app at a $3 starting fee plus $3 per 30 minutes. Renters must be 18 or older and wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket, and it's one person per boat. Fishing follows Texas Parks and Wildlife rules, and anglers 18 and older need a license.

13. Walk or Bike the Wilson Creek Trail

The Wilson Creek Trail is about 10 miles of paved trail that links Towne Lake Park and Bonnie Wenk Park into one greenway, with parking and restrooms along the way. It's the easiest long walk or ride in the city and connects to McKinney's larger system of about 80 miles of trails.

14. Take the Dog to Bonnie Wenk Park

Bonnie Wenk Park, at 2996 Virginia Parkway, has a 2 acre fenced dog park with a splash pad, a shaded pavilion, and separate areas for big and small dogs. The park also has a fishing pond, trail loops, playgrounds, and a fitness station.

15. Hike Gray Branch Parkland

Gray Branch, at 1299 Gray Branch Road, is 212 acres of former farmland with grassland, woods, and seasonal wildflowers. Three natural surface loops measure 1.2, 0.8, and 1.2 miles. It's quieter than Towne Lake and a better pick when you want an actual hike.

16. Plan Ahead for Erwin Park

Erwin Park is 212 wooded acres in north McKinney with about 10 to 11 miles of mountain bike trails maintained by the Dallas Off Road Bicycle Association and 12 rustic tent campsites. It closed Aug. 10, 2026 for a renovation that adds an overlook tower, new restrooms and pavilions, a concrete inner loop trail, and water and electric at campsites. The city expects it to reopen in fall 2027, so put it on next year's list.

Recreation

17. Swim at the Apex Centre

The Apex Centre, at 3003 Alma Road in Gabe Nesbitt Community Park, opened in 2017 as a $36 million aquatics and fitness center. Visit McKinney lists it at 80,000 square feet, with a competition pool, indoor and outdoor leisure pools, courts, and an elevated running track. Day passes are available.

18. Play Tennis or Pickleball at the Courts of McKinney

The Courts of McKinney, at 3253 Alma Road, added a 55,000 square foot indoor building with six courts next to 23 outdoor courts, per a 2023 report. The complex has outdoor pickleball too. It's one of the better public tennis setups in Collin County.

19. Throw a Round of Disc Golf

Towne Lake has an 18 hole disc golf course, and Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Complex has the Alex Clark Memorial Disc Golf Course. Both are free. Bring a couple of discs and you're set for an evening.

20. Wander Adriatica Village

Adriatica is a 45 acre Croatian inspired village inside Stonebridge Ranch, with a bell tower, the Bella Donna Chapel, cobblestone streets, shops, restaurants, and The Guitar Sanctuary event venue. Visit McKinney calls it one of the most photographed places in North Texas, and it's a nice change from the downtown scene.

Annual Events and Sports

21. Arts in Bloom (April)

Arts in Bloom is McKinney's downtown art and wine celebration, held the second weekend in April. It's a good first introduction to the square when the weather is still mild.

22. Texas Music Revolution (June)

This downtown music festival runs the first full weekend in June. Check the lineup early in the year, and plan for heat.

23. Oktoberfest (September)

McKinney's Oktoberfest is three days on the historic square over the last weekend in September. It's the biggest downtown weekend of the year, so arrive early or plan on a walk from the garages.

24. Home for the Holidays (Thanksgiving Weekend)

"Home for the Holidays, A McKinney Christmas" fills the square over Thanksgiving weekend. Locals treat it as the start of the holiday season.

25. Watch Pro Golf and College Football

THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson is played at TPC Craig Ranch each May. The 2026 event ran May 21 to 24 with a $10.3 million purse on a par 71 course that plays 7,385 yards. In December, McKinney hosts the NCAA Division II Football Championship at McKinney ISD Stadium, 4201 Hardin Blvd., a 12,000 seat stadium. McKinney has hosted the game since 2018, and the 2026 championship is set for Saturday, Dec. 19.

A Few More Worth Knowing

  • Krewe of Barkus: a downtown dog parade the Sunday before Mardi Gras.
  • Red, White and BOOM: McKinney's July 4 celebration.
  • Fly from home: Avelo Airlines starts commercial flights from McKinney National Airport on Nov. 11, 2026, beginning with Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and Orlando.
  • Trick or Treat Trail: a Halloween event at Towne Lake Park.

How Location Affects What You'll Actually Do

Where you live in McKinney changes which of these become habits. If you live in or near the historic district, the square, the farmers market, and TUPPS are walkable or a quick drive. West McKinney neighborhoods near SH 121 are closer to Craig Ranch, the Courts of McKinney, and the Apex Centre. North McKinney and Trinity Falls put you nearer Erwin Park once it reopens. Browse McKinney homes for sale or see my best neighborhoods in McKinney guide to match a neighborhood to how you spend weekends. Golfers can search golf course communities.
